My daughter hasn't had a period yet, but some of her friends have. (I know because their mom's told me.) I wonder how much and what kind of information I should give my daughter so she won't be scared or surprised when it happens. I have talked to her about the "birds and bees" - very basic reproductive information - since she was little, but this is different.

My daughter got her period just before her 12th birthday. She already knew what to expect because we have always been open with her about it. She was not scared at all.

Chances are, if some of your daughter's friends have started, she also knows what to expect. You may want to just ask her if she has any questions or worries about it. Talking while driving in the car is always good, because she doesn't have to look at you. It's less embarrassing for a lot of kids that way!

I'll try harder to bring up "uncomfortable" topics in the car. Saves me from looking at her, too. Funny, they think (as we did at that age) that parents don't know squat. Thanks.
