Question: How do I get my child to stop hitting?

Answer: In the first year of your child's life you might notice that they begin to hit. Alex's phase of this started around 14 months. This is actually very common thing for babies to go through, but that doesn't make it okay. How my husband and I handled this was by calmly telling Alex "no hitting, hitting hurts mommy/daddy". Then we move him from where ever the hitting took place. Even if this happened in a store, one of us would have to walk outside with Alex. It takes a lot of time and patience. We are using this method rather than spanking because we felt that would just reinforce the hitting behavior and as he gets older we don't want him to use violence as a way to fix his problems.

We got Alex the Jeep Liberty Sport Urban Terrain stroller and he loves it! We used to have one of those strollers that came with a car seat, but it didn't last very long so I did a lot of looking around before we got a new one. I think that we made the right choice. It is a very smooth ride for Alex, and he really likes the steering wheel. It makes him feel like he is driving himself around! Also my husband, who is tall, has no problem pushing it. With our old one he would always hit his foot on the stroller while trying to push it.

When you are ready to begin teaching your baby to read make sure that both you and your little one are happy and having a good day, this way your baby associates reading and learning with being happy. A great way to teach your baby to read is to play the reading game a couple times a day for short periods of time.

How do you play the Reading Game?

Make flash cards with words on them. Write big and bold so that it can be seen by your child clearly. Show the flash cards to them quickly because they will be picking it up quickly. Keep adding new words. The more consistent you are with your child the more he/she will learn. It is very important to stop before they want to. Leave your baby wanting more instead of burning them out on it. Let them learn at their own pace so that learning to read is something fun that your child looks forward to. Get excited to play the game and so will they!!!

It is amazing how much children are really learning! The more information that a child takes in the more that stays with them. They also really want to learn! Treat learning to read like a treat rather than a chore.

When you are upset or sad and your baby senses that something is bothering you, don't tell them "mommy is fine" because they may learn to doubt their instincts. Try asking them "can you give me a hug to help make mommy feel better?" or something like that.

Nobody is perfect and you are bound to get upset or sad in front of your child, you are human. It is important for a child to learn to trust there gut in case they are put in a situation later on in there life. Teach them to trust their gut now, and hopefully it well help them later on down the road.
