After your baby is born you will notice that the umbilical cord is scabbed up. It will take a week or two before it falls off.

When you are changing your new baby's diaper in those first weeks you have to make sure that you fold the diaper down so that the cord is not covered. If you find the diapers that are made just for the umbilical cord you could try those. I never did see any myself, so I don't know how well they work.

When you change the diaper it is also a good time to clean the cord. You can use water or rubbing alcohol. Ask your Dr. and see which they recommend you using. Some are saying that water works just fine.
